Timor Island

INTRODUCTION

The Korowai, also called the Kolufo, are the people who live in southeastern West Papua in the Indonesian province of Papua, close to the border with Papua New Guinea. The population are around 3000 people.

Korowai is a tribe found around 35 years ago in the remote part of Papua. Before that, the Korowai were unaware of the existence of any peoples other than themselves”. Unlike other Papuan on the island, the Korowai don’t wear “koteka”.

DAY 1: JAYAPURA – DEKAI

From Jayapura, we will take another flight to Dekai – either by Wings Air at 11.15-12.25 or by Trigana Air at 12.30-13.20.

Upon arrival at Dekai, we will receive briefing about our expedition to the Korowai Tribe. We will stay overnight at Dekai (non-AC), hence, if we need to buy some snacks or any other necessities, it is still possible.

DAY 2: DEKAI – LOGPON – MABUL VILLAGE

After breakfast, we will get to Logpon Habour by car (45 minutes) continue with river cruising to the Mabul Village. Due to the water debit in the river that can be low sometimes, the only way to get there is by taking a longboat.

This journey will take about 8 hours and the weather during the journey can be very hot, around 37º-40º C. Stay overnight at the local home at Mabul Village.

DAY 3: MABUL VILLAGE – KOROWAI TRIBE

After breakfast, we will start trekking through the jungle to meet the Korowai who still live in the tree houses. All our belongings will be carried by porters.

Expected to go through muddy trails, hot sun, mosquitoes, puddles, and highly possibly leeches along the way. The trek to the Korowai will take about 3-4 hours. Stay overnight in a hut.

DAY 4-5: KOROWAI TRIBE

During these two days, here are some of the activities that we will do.

• Tree House
We will learn how to go up and down to the tree house and repair the house roof. There will be some activities in the tree house, too.

• Panggur Sagu
Search for Sago tree and learn how to utilise it.

• Sago Worm
Sago worm is one of the Papuan favorite foods. We will learn how to search and cut it into two.

• Timba Kali
Timba Kali is the local way of fishing. It means to dry up the river to catch the fish with hands.

• Kaboti
Kaboti means trap. We will learn how make fish trap.

• Hunting
We will learn from the locals on how they hunt for food

• Cooking
We will learn how they prepare their meals.

DAY 6: KOROWAI TRIBE – MABUL VILLAGE – PEPERA VILLAGE

After breakfast, we will trek back to Mabul Village and continue our journey to Pepera Village with a longboat. Stay overnight at the local house.

DAY 7: PEPERA VILLAGE – LOGPON – DEKAI

Today we will make our back to Logpon with a longboat and get to Dekai with car. Stay overnight at Dekai (non-AC)

DAY 8: DEKAI – JAYAPURA

Transfer to Dekai Airport to catch our flight back to Jayapura. Suggested flight is either Wings Air at 12.45-13.50 or Trigana Air at 15.10-16.00.

• 7 nights accommodation
– 2 night at Dekai (non-AC)
– 2 night at local houses (on air mattress and mosquitoes net)
– 3 nights on hut at Korowai
