At only 2,665 meters above sea level, Mount Papapandayan is known among hikers as “the mountain for beginners”. Yet there are very few mountains in Indonesia that are like Mt. Papandayan, cramming as it does into its breathtaking view a beautiful edelweiss meadow, a dead forest and a steaming sulfur crater.

Mount Papandayan

INTRODUCTION

Mount Papandayan is a complex strata volcano situated at the island of Java. It has four large summit craters with the youngest of which was breached to the NE by collapse during a brief eruption in 1772 and contains active fumarole fields. This interesting place lies on the border of the Bandung and Garut regencies, about seventy kilometres south of Bandung and about 19,25 km from Garut.

Papandayan, cramming as it does into its breathtaking view a beautiful edelweiss meadow, a dead forest and a steaming sulfur crater.

In reality, the experience of climbing the stratovolcano complex located in Garut, West Java, frequently surpasses the expectations of almost all hikers and even those who, at first, might underestimate the still active volcano and take the ascent there lightly. Hikers can see and play in the warm water flowing in Mt. Papandayan small sulfur river during their climb to the top.

Highlights

Bandung

Bandung, capital of Indonesia’s West Java province, is a large city set amid volcanoes and tea plantations. It’s known for colonial and art deco architecture, a lively, university-town feel and – thanks to its 768m elevation – relatively cool tropical weather. Bandung is also a shopping destination, with fashion outlets clustered along Jalan Setiabudi and Jalan Riau in the Dago district.

Tegal Alun

Famous for the breathtaking view of its edelweiss meadow, the place is frequently used as a camp site for hikers looking to rest before performing the last assault on the summit.

Dead Forest

Most hikers ascending Mt. Papandayan look to savour the exotic view of Hutan Mati (the dead forest). The forest’€™s vegetation has been scorched away by the lava flow from a past eruption.

Papandayan Crater

The sulphur crater lake of Mount Papandayan, is one of the favourites stops for the hikers to take a break before heading back home.
