Itinerary

A day-by-day plan.

DAY
1

WAMENA – SOGOKMO – YETNI RIVER – KURIMA – KILISE (B,L,D)

(Trekking 4-5 hours, approx. 9 km)

After breakfast, we’ll depart by car for a 40-minute drive south to the Yetni River. From there, we begin our trek with the guidance of our experienced guide and porter team, heading toward the village of Kilise, situated at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level.

Along the way, we’ll pass through Polimo village, beside the old missionary grass airstrip. About an hour into the trek, we’ll frequently encounter traditional Dani villages and sweet potato gardens. We’ll take time to stop and observe the local way of life—an excellent opportunity to learn about their daily activities and cultural traditions.

A packed lunch will be provided by your guide and enjoyed en route. We recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes and bringing a rain poncho to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trek.

Accommodation at Kilise

Tonight, you’ll stay in a traditional Dani village house known as a Honai. Basic toilet facilities are available nearby, and there’s a small waterfall close to the village for a refreshing visit.
DAY
2

KILISE – SYOKOSIMO VILLAGE (B,L,D)

(Trekking 4-5 hours, approx. 9 km)

After breakfast, we continue our trek, walking for approximately two hours with our team along local paths. We’ll cross the Baliem River via a suspension bridge to reach the Dani village of Bandes, where we’ll stop for lunch.

Today’s trek is slightly longer, and some sections of the trail may be slippery, especially after overnight rain. Please don’t hesitate to ask your guide or porter for assistance when needed.

By afternoon, we’ll arrive at Syokosimo village, located near the Mugi River. If time allows, your guide will take you on a short walk around the village to observe and learn about daily life and local customs.

Dinner will be prepared by our team and served at your guesthouse.

Accommodation in Syokosimo

Overnight stay at a basic homestay. Simple toilet facilities are available, and a nearby river offers a chance to wash or relax by the water.
DAY
3

SYOKOSIMO – UGEM – PILABA (B,L,D)

(Trekking 5-6 hours, approx. 14 km)

We continue our trek by following traditional Dani trails along the Mugi River. After crossing a bridge over the river, we begin a steady ascent of about 500 meters to reach the village of Ugem, located at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level.

Along the way, we pass several Dani settlements as we head toward the northern part of the valley. One of the highlights of today’s journey is the breathtaking view of the South Valley, beautifully combined with glimpses into the daily lives of the Dani people along the trail.

Accommodation in Pilaba

Overnight stay at a basic homestay. Simple toilet facilities are available, and a nearby river can be used for washing.
DAY
4

PILABA – SOGOKMO – WAMENA (B,L,D)

(Trekking 2-3 hours, approx. 7 km)

On our last day, we trek for approximately 3 hours through the northern part of the valley to reach the village of Sogokmo, where our vehicle will be waiting.

Along the way, we’ll pass several Dani settlements and have more opportunities to observe village life and families along the trail. This path is also commonly used by members of the Yali tribe as they return to their remote highland villages—such as Angguruk, Pronggoli, or Kosarek—a journey that takes them 3 to 5 days on foot through rugged mountain terrain.

Upon arrival at Sogokmo, our final trekking point, we’ll transfer by car for a 45-minute drive back to Wamena.
DAY
5

WAMENA – JAYAPURA – JAKARTA (B)

After breakfast, we make our way back to Jayapura, where our unforgettable journey comes to an end.

Conditions in the Field:

Wamena is a small town with limited accommodation options, and hotel rooms can be difficult to secure due to high demand. For this reason, we strongly recommend confirming your booking early by making a down payment. While there are no luxury or star-rated hotels, the available accommodations are generally clean, simple, comfortable, and safe for resting.
Please note that toilet facilities along the way to the festival and in traditional villages may be basic and not always clean. We especially advise female travelers to carry tissues or wet wipes in their bags at all times for convenience.
Since the activity is heavily influenced by weather conditions, we kindly ask for your understanding and cooperation throughout the journey. Flexibility and teamwork help ensure a positive experience for everyone.
