Sumba Island

INTRODUCTION

Sumba, natively also spelt as Humba or Hubba (in Sumba languages) is an Indonesian island located in Eastern Indonesia and administratively part of the East Nusa Tenggara provincial territory. The largest town on the island is the main port of Waingapu with a population of 70,060 (including the adjoining district of Kambera) in mid-2022. Besides the natural attractions such as beaches, lakes, waterfalls and stunning savanna hills, Sumba is known for its culture that is still well preserved.

This five-day overland tour offers a comprehensive journey through the diverse landscapes and deep-rooted traditions of Sumba Island, traveling from the southwest to the east. The itinerary balances natural wonders—such as the turquoise Weekuri Lagoon, the iconic Lapopu Waterfall, and the rolling savannas of Wairinding Hill—with immersive cultural visits to ancient megalithic sites and traditional villages like Ratenggaro and Praijing, known for their high-roofed houses.

Capping off the experience with sunrise views over the “zigzag” roads of Tanarara and the unique “dancing” mangroves of Walakiri Beach, the trip provides a seamless exploration of one of Indonesia’s most authentic and visually stunning islands.

Itinerary

A day-by-day plan.

  • DAY

    1

    West Sumba (L,D)

    Upon arrival, our journey begins with a pick-up from Tambolaka Airport, followed by a hearty lunch to fuel our exploration of western Sumba Island.

    Our first destination is the Ratenggaro Traditional Village, arguably the most iconic village in the region. Its towering, uniquely shaped thatched-roof houses can be spotted from afar, and we will take our time here to immerse ourselves in the fascinating daily lives of the locals.

    Next, we will head to the breathtaking Weekuri Lake (also known as Weekuri Lagoon). This crystal-clear oasis allows us to see straight to the bottom, and despite appearing separated from the ocean, its waters are surprisingly salty. Here, we can enjoy a refreshing swim or simply relax by the tranquil water’s edge.

    As the afternoon winds down, we will move on to the pristine white sands of Mandorak Beach to catch a spectacular sunset—a true must-see destination in Southwest Sumba. Finally, we will enjoy dinner along the way as we head back to our accommodation to rest for the night.

    2

    West Sumba (B)

    After breakfast, we will gear up for a scenic trek to Weekacura Waterfall, a truly unique cascade beautifully hidden amidst lush green rice paddies. The trails can be a bit muddy and slippery, so wearing shoes or sandals with a strong grip is highly recommended! Depending on the water levels that day, we might be able to take a refreshing dip. Regardless, simply taking in the breathtaking views of this natural wonder is an unforgettable experience.

    Next, we will make our way to the Prai Ijing Traditional Village, strategically located just outside the central town of Waikabubak. Because the village is perched at a high elevation, it offers us spectacular panoramic views of the sweeping rice terraces below. Here, we can also admire the resilience of the community by viewing the 37 traditional thatched-roof houses that proudly survived a major fire in the year 2000.

    Our final stop of the day takes us to the endless, rolling landscapes of Warinding Hill. With clear skies and favorable weather, we will end the day by watching a truly magnificent sunset over the hills!

    3

    East Sumba (B)

    Waking up to the breathtaking sight of Morinda Hill in Waingapu is an experience we will wish we could repeat every morning. Next, we will take in the sweeping, unmissable panoramas from the summit of Tanarara Hill. After soaking in these lush, green landscapes, we will channel our energy into a rewarding 20 to 30-minute hike down to the spectacular Waimarang Waterfall. The stunning, crystal-clear water pooling into a unique U-shaped natural basin at the base of the falls is truly a sight to behold.

    From there, we will continue our journey to the enchanting Walakiri Beach. As one of East Sumba’s most beautiful coastal spots, it features pristine white sands lined with shady coconut trees and a remarkably unique mangrove forest, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. As the sun begins to set, the vibrant colors of the twilight sky perfectly contrast with the dancing silhouettes of the unique mangrove trees, creating an incredibly artistic and photogenic scene that is a joy to capture from every angle.

    4

    East Sumba (B)

    Today, we will explore the great savannahs of Sumba at Puru Kambera, beautifully set against the breathtaking backdrop of the ocean. The landscape here transforms dramatically with the seasons—offering a striking golden expanse of dry grasses and sparse trees during the dry months, or lush, vibrant green pastures during the wet season. While we are there, we might even spot majestic local Sumba horses grazing peacefully in the wild.

    Next, we will head to the magnificent Tanggedu Waterfall. Unlike the previous waterfalls we have visited, Tanggedu flows through a striking canyon and deep river gorge. Framed by beautifully carved rock contours and featuring stunningly blue waters—especially when the sunlight hits it at just the right hour—this cascade is a true natural wonder. We can dip our feet into the stream and enjoy the refreshing rush of the cool water running over them.

    After working up an appetite from all the morning’s fun, we will enjoy a well-deserved lunch. Before returning to our accommodation in Waingapu, we will slow the pace down to take in the panoramic sunset views at Tanau. It is the perfect, tranquil moment to clear our minds and rest our eyes on the beautiful rolling greenery one last time before we head home the following day.

    5

    East Sumba

    It is an early start today as we prepare for our journey home. We will be dropped off at the airport, saying our final goodbyes to the island and carrying home unforgettable memories of our time together.
