INTRODUCTION

Held annually in the lush, remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the Baliem Valley Festival is a breathtaking celebration of the region’s rich indigenous heritage. For several days each August, the diverse tribes of the valley—most notably the Dani, Lani, and Yali people—gather in Wamena to celebrate peace and proudly showcase their distinct cultural identities.

Visitors are treated to a spectacular, vibrant display of mock tribal warfare, rhythmic traditional dances, elaborate body painting, and authentic local music. It is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step back in time and witness one of the most culturally immersive and visually stunning festivals in the world.

A day-by-day plan.

  • DAY

    1

    Jayapura – Wamena

    All participants are expected to arrive in Jayapura in time to connect with either the 11:40 AM or 2:20 PM onward flight to Wamena. After a quick, one-hour scenic journey over the stunning Papuan landscape, you will touch down in Wamena and transfer directly to the hotel. Take some time to check in, rest, and freshen up after your travels. Later in the afternoon, we will head up to Wamena Hill to relax, stretch our legs, and soak in the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

    WAMENA (B,L,D)

    After a hearty breakfast, we will journey to the Obia Traditional Village, where you can witness ancient Papuan traditions come to life. Here, you will experience captivating cultural demonstrations, including vibrant traditional dances, the ancient survival art of making fire without matches, and the fascinating stone-burning cooking ritual (bakar batu). Following this immersive cultural experience, we will make our way to the main grounds of the world-renowned Baliem Valley Festival to dive straight into the grand, colorful celebrations!

    Wamena (B,L)

    Fuel up with breakfast before heading out for a full, action-packed day at the Baliem Valley Festival. Prepare to be mesmerized as you spend the entire day completely immersed in a spectacular showcase of traditional tribal performances, vibrant cultural displays, and thrilling local attractions that bring the rich spirit of Papua to life!

    4

    Wamena (B,L,D)

    Today’s cultural immersion continues with a visit to the picturesque Suroba Traditional Village. We will then journey to the village of Jiwika to witness a remarkable and sacred piece of local history: a preserved, 350-year-old mummy of the Dani Tribe. Afterward, we will take time to explore a vibrant local traditional market, offering a fantastic opportunity to experience the bustling daily life and unique goods of the region. To cap off the day, we will return to the Baliem Valley Festival grounds to experience the grand, unforgettable closing ceremonies of this spectacular event.

    5

    Wamena – Jayapura (B)

    Rise bright and early for a quick breakfast before packing up and checking out of the hotel. We will then transfer directly to Wamena Airport in time to catch our 6:00 AM morning flight back to Jayapura, bidding farewell to the stunning highlands.
